Bengaluru experienced 11.8 mm of rain on Saturday, which was 6 mm above the average for March, making it the sixth-highest rainfall for the month in the past two decades.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the rain caused a one-degree dip in the maximum temperature, bringing it down to 33.4°C. The minimum temperature also dropped by nearly two degrees to 19.5°C, providing temporary relief from the rising summer heat.
IMD Forecast: Cloudy Skies, No Rain in Sight
Despite the weekend’s downpour, the IMD’s 48-hour weather forecast predicts partly cloudy skies for Bengaluru. No further rainfall is expected during this period.
The city will witness dry weather, with the maximum temperature expected to reach 32°C and the minimum temperature around 22°C. The humidity levels may remain high due to the recent rain, making the weather slightly humid but bearable.
Tragedy Strikes: Three-Year-Old Girl Crushed by Falling Tree
The heavy rain and strong winds resulted in a tragic accident near Devarajeevanahalli Park in East Bengaluru. A three-year-old girl lost her life when a tree trunk snapped and fell on the bike she was riding with her father.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, the child succumbed to her injuries during treatment. The incident has raised serious concerns about the condition of old and weak trees in the city.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) announced that it will conduct a tree health assessment to identify and remove unstable trees, aiming to prevent such incidents in the future.
Rainfall Disrupts Traffic and Daily Life
Saturday’s heavy showers caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas, leading to traffic congestion and commuter delays. Many roads were blocked due to fallen trees and debris, making it difficult for vehicles to pass.
The BBMP’s emergency teams worked overnight to clear the uprooted trees and restore normalcy. However, power outages were reported in some neighborhoods due to fallen branches damaging electric poles.
Precautionary Measures for Cloudy Weather
While no rain is expected, the cloudy conditions may result in gusty winds. Here are some safety tips for Bengaluru residents:
Stay alert and follow IMD weather updates.
Avoid parking vehicles near old or unstable trees.
Be cautious while walking or driving in tree-lined areas.
Keep emergency contact numbers and flashlights handy in case of power failures.
Bengaluru is expected to witness cloudy but rain-free weather over the next two days, with pleasant temperatures. While the rain brought much-needed relief, it also led to tragic incidents and infrastructure damage. Authorities are working to clear debris and ensure public safety.
